You’re an expat wife, see?

“You’re an expatriate. You’ve lost touch with the soil. You get precious. Fake European standards have ruined you. You drink yourself to death. You become obsessed with sex. You spend all your time talking, not working. You are an expatriate, see? You hang around cafes.”
-Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises

This series is an homage to the endangered species that is the old fashioned expat wife – the lady of leisure that ‘happily’ spends her days under the palm trees at the pool of her beautiful house, sipping Gin Tonics while her husband works, the children are taken care of by the maid and the gardener is cutting the grass.

Expat life is not like that anymore.

Well, at least not all of the time…

Susan Haveman is a Dutch expat wife and amateur photographer. Before following her husband to Malaysia five years ago, she worked as a freelance journalist for various magazines in The Netherlands, often together with photographers.

“I loved watching them work and then seeing the results – it seemed, and still seems, like a kind of magic to me. Back then, I learned what to look for in a good picture. Now I’m trying to figure out how to take one myself.”  – Susan

This project would not have been possible without the help of an amazing number of very cool expat wives – and a few good, brave men. Special thanks go out to Yvonne Kusters, for styling and make up.

Susan (Exp+4) was mentored by Steven Lee.
